Bugs Gunny
I rescued Bugs from a stuffed animal bin at the Goodwill. It was more like a holding cell. He looked like he’d been on a drinking binge and thrown out of a moving car. He definitely needed a shower and a brief stint in rehab, so I adopted him.
I found the table-top ironing board across the room which I later converted into his surfboard. “But Warren, why a surfboard?”, you might ask. Think “Apocalypse Now” meets the killer rabbit from “The Holy Grail”. The army helmet was found at a thrift store sitting on a desk in the backroom. I asked if it was for sale and the clerk said, “Yes Darling, it’s a quarter. It was fifty cents but it’s half price today.” Done!
Next stop was the army surplus store for the plastic bullet belt and knife. Easy enough. The waves are made of pillow stuffing painted and glued onto shaped poster board. One notable detail not so visible in the photo: the yellow Alfred E. Newman button with “What, me worry?” on the helmet.
Now he’s sober (not really), pissed off (absolutely!) and on a mission to find the bastards that threw him out of that moving car (not really). Personally, I think he was just drunk and fell off the curb but I’m not about to tell him that.
