New Exhibition: Durham Art Guild

My newest exhibition is currently on display at the Durham Art Guild until May 27th, 2012. The opening reception is this Friday, April 20th from 5:30-7:30. Afterwards I’ll be at my studio in Golden Belt until 9:00 for the remainder of 3rd Friday.

I’ll be showing with three other artists at the DAG during this same period: Kelly Cross, Linwood Hart and sculptor Renee Leverty.

NC Museum of Art – exhibition installation

I spent a week at the museum helping install the current exhibit by El Anatsui – one of contemporary art’s most celebrated practitioners—from his early woodwork in Ghana to today’s metal wall sculptures created in his studio in Nigeria. It is always fun to work with everyone at the museum. I’ll be back in July to pack up the show. I’m glad because it pays well!

I remember this piece being especially heavy! That’s me in the cool shirt.

This piece consisted of around 1,200 boxes that had to be specifically placed. There were many changes that had to be made in the layout. Crazy! I’m the one with the beard.

NBC exposure

This painting was featured on the local NBC program “My Carolina Today” a/k/a “Chick Chat” on Jan.31, 2012 . It aired immediately after the “Today” show. They introduced the painting, asked if I worked for Dr. Seuss (?) and announced the opening of my solo exhibition at Art Space. I would like to thank Art Space for making this happen!!

This is the link to the previously mentioned program. NBC- My Carolina Today WARNING! This show is painfully cheesy so you can skip past the first 63 seconds to get to the 48 second clip about the painting. If you love cheesy shows then you’re in for a special treat! I’m not complaining though. It was great exposure and the painting remained on the set for a week!

Solo Exhibition at Art Space in Raleigh, NC

I never got around to posting this but this is the series that was on exhibit during the month of Feb., at Art Space in Raleigh, NC. There were 10 paintings in total on display. If you click on this image you can see the entire series of 21 paintings.

The paintings for my show at ArtSpace in Feb. are completed. So now I’m back in exploration mode for my show at the Durham Art Guild in April. I want that show to be completely different. I’m really happy with this painting! I plan on pushing in this direction to see where it will lead me. I love painting larger canvases!

A battle-worn soldier

This is the brush that I’ve used for most of this entire series of new paintings. It has been in use off and on for over 9 years. This image was taken a few months ago so the brush is even a little more worse for wear. I’ve started breaking in some new brushes but this one will always have a special place in my heart. It’s only a mater of a few short weeks before I’ll have to send it off to brush heaven. For the technique I’ve been using for this series the crappier the brush the better.

This is another experimental piece I did several months ago and forgot to post. It will be 44×44 in. when stretched. It is currently rolled up in the corner for now. I think I’m really happy with it but only time will tell.

Studio Tour conclusion

It’s over! This year’s Tour brought 238 visitors to my house to see my new work. That is a new record. Last year I had 164! The weather was perfect so that might be a big contributing factor.  I thoroughly enjoyed see so many new faces and all of the great conversations I had with visitors. Time to start preparing for next year. Just kidding. I always wait until the last minute. So now it’s time to start procrastinating.

Studio Tour update

Thanks to everyone who came out for the tour. I had a record attendance of 150 visitors. This is the final weekend so come and see my newest works if you get a chance. I’ll have brownies.

Cheers!

Open Studio Tour

Greetings!
It’s that magical time of year again. The Orange County Artists’ Guild Open Studio Tour starts this weekend and continues the following weekend. I’ve once again gutted my house and turned it into a gallery space (good times).

I’ll have around twelve new canvases and other paintings on display. I also have two new ceramic tile designs, journals, note cards, puzzles, magnets, etc. (Just a reminder, the Tour is at my house in Chapel Hill and not my studio in Durham.) There are also 74 artists participating this year (in their own studios of course). http://www.orangecountyartistsguild.com/

Studio Tour dates:
Nov. 5th & 6th
Nov. 12th & 13th

Saturdays 10:00 – 5:00
Sundays 12:00 – 5:00

Get directions: 203 Burlage Circle, Chapel Hill, NC

Hope you can make it!

Untitled

Warren Hicks - small green

This is another smaller piece, 24×24 in. (when stretched.) I think it’s finished but I will continue to stare at it to make sure before I stretch it. I’m already un-stretching canvases that I’ve fallen out of love with. It’s a pain in the ass so I don’t want to do it any more than I have to.
